Green furniture in the news

Our neighbor to the East, Chicago, has a great local advocate in Karen Kalmek, owner of Green Home Chicago. Not only is she creating and designing beautiful furniture, she's helping drive the local economy.

In this video, CNN talks with Karen about how and why she's doing things just a little bit different. "I'm certainly not a tree hugger," says Kalmek....but we all know that actions speak louder than words.

Public Meetings for MPLS Bike Master Plan

The City of Minneapolis is seeking comments on it draft Bicycle Master Plan, which establishes goals, objectives, and benchmarks to improve safety and mobility for bicyclists and also increase the number of trips taken by bicycle. The draft plan details policies and practices around bicycling in Minneapolis, and includes an update to the 2001 Bicycle Master Plan Map.

Five public meetings will be held to gather public input and answer questions. The meeting times and places are as follows:

Monday, Aug. 30, Edison High School Auditorium, 700 22nd Ave. NE, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Wednesday, Sept. 1, Roosevelt High School Auditorium, 4029 28th Ave. S, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Wednesday, Sept. 8, Washburn High School Auditorium, 201 W 49th St., 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Monday, Sept. 13, Minneapolis Central Library, Pohlad Hall Auditorium, 300 Nicollet Mall, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Wednesday, Sept. 15, University of Minnesota Urban Research and Outreach/Engagement Center, 2001 Plymouth Ave. N, 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

It's almost that time of the year again...MN State Fair starts 8/26

It's that time of the year again for the Minnesota State Fair. Get ready for lots of livestock, music, and more food on a stick than you can shake a stick at!

This year's fair also features the Eco Experience. "Presented by the Minnesota State Fair and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, this exhibit is designed to inspire people to lead more sustainable lives while improving quality of life and the environment. The Eco Experience showcases renewable energy and exhibits on air, water, land, green buildings, organic agriculture and local foods." -mnstatefair.org

Make sure to check out the Green Street exhibit: "Both familiar and futuristic, Green Street is a mini-version of a walkable neighborhood with community space, renewable energy and carbon footprint-reducing transportation options. The model street includes a community garden, play area, rain garden, public performance space and “distributed” energy sources including a carport and electric car charging station." -mnstatefair.org
